The difference between MIG Welding and Friction Stir Welding

When it comes to welding, there are many techniques available.
Among the most popular are MIG welding and friction stir welding.
Despite serving similar purposes, these two methods have significant differences.
Understanding them can help you choose the right approach for your project.

What is MIG Welding?

MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas.
This welding method uses a continuous wire electrode fed through a welding gun.
The wire melts and joins the metals together.
Shielding gas, usually argon or a mix of gases, is released from the gun to protect the weld area from contamination.
MIG welding is known for its ease of use and speed.

Process of MIG Welding

MIG welding involves feeding a wire into the weld area.
An electric arc is generated between the wire and the metal pieces.
The heat from the arc melts the wire and the base metals, forming a weld pool.
As the weld pool solidifies, it joins the metal pieces together.

Advantages of MIG Welding

MIG welding is suitable for various types of metal, including steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
It can be used in different positions, whether flat, vertical, or overhead.

Disadvantages of MIG Welding

What is Friction Stir Welding?

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process, meaning no melting occurs.
Instead, it uses frictional heat to join materials.
A rotating tool with a pin is inserted into the joint between two pieces of metal.
As the tool moves along the joint line, it generates heat, softening the metal.
The softened metals are stirred together and then cool to form a solid joint.

Process of Friction Stir Welding

The FSW process starts with clamping the metal pieces onto a worktable.
A rotating tool with a cylindrical shoulder and a pin is then inserted into the joint.
The friction between the tool and the metal generates heat, causing the metal to become plastic, but not melt.
As the tool moves along the joint, it stirs the softened metal from both sides.
This creates a solid phase bond between the pieces.

Advantages of Friction Stir Welding

One of the main benefits of FSW is the strong, high-quality welds it produces.
FSW is particularly effective for welding aluminum and other soft metals.
There are no fumes, and little to no filler material is needed.
It also consumes less energy compared to traditional methods.
Moreover, FSW can join metals that are difficult to weld using conventional techniques.

Disadvantages of Friction Stir Welding

FSW requires specialized equipment, which can be expensive.
The process is mostly restricted to linear welds, making it less versatile for complex shapes.
High clamping forces are required to hold the pieces in place.
FSW is also slower compared to other welding techniques like MIG welding.
