But enough top contenders in industries from electronics to industrial machinery prove the merits of this exemplary production approach. The continued influence of Japanese manufacturing methods speaks volumes about getting production right.

It would be overly simplistic to attribute Japan’s manufacturing prowess solely to cultural factors. Significant government support also played a role, as did external economic pressures. But the blend of discipline, diligence and constant refinement ingrained in Japanese business culture clearly gave – and continues to give – the country’s industries competitive advantages.
