How to sew a tote bag in the right order and manage tension to create a perfect look

Getting Started with Tote Bag Sewing

Sewing a tote bag is a rewarding project for both beginners and experienced sewers.
It’s an opportunity to create something functional while allowing for customization in fabric and design.
Before diving into the sewing process, having all necessary materials and tools on hand will ensure a smooth experience.

Materials and Tools You Will Need

To begin, gather all required materials:
– Fabric for the bag exterior
– Lining fabric
– Thread matching the fabric
– Scissors or a rotary cutter
– Pins or clips
– Sewing machine
– Iron and ironing board

For measurements, it’s recommended to pre-plan the size of your tote bag.
A standard tote bag might use a fabric size of approximately 14 inches by 16 inches for the body.
Depending on the design, handles can vary in length, but usually, they are about 20-24 inches long.

Cutting the Fabric

Once you have your materials ready, the next step is cutting the fabric.
This step requires attention to detail for achieving a polished finish.

Start by cutting two equal pieces from both your main fabric and lining.
Ensure each piece is cut straight and precisely to maintain symmetry in your tote bag.

Preparing the Fabric Pieces

Before sewing, it’s good practice to iron all fabric pieces.
This will eliminate creases, making them easier to sew and resulting in a neater finish.
Press each cut piece with an iron, focusing on any wrinkles or folds.

Sewing the Tote Bag Body

Once your fabric is prepped, it’s time to start sewing the main body of the tote bag.
Follow these steps for a seamless process:

1. Place the exterior fabric pieces right sides together.
2. Pin or clip the sides and bottom to hold them in place.
3. Using a straight stitch, sew along the pinned sides and bottom, leaving the top open.
4. Repeat the same process for the lining pieces.

Ensure consistent seam allowances for both the exterior and lining.
Typically, a 1/2 inch seam allowance works well.

Managing Tension for Seam Perfection

While sewing, managing the sewing machine’s tension setting is crucial.
If the stitch loops or the seam puckers, the tension might be too tight or too loose.
Doing a test stitch on scrap fabric can determine the correct tension setting and prevent uneven stitching.

Creating Boxed Corners

To give your tote bag a more structured look, creating boxed corners is effective.

Here’s how to do it:

1. With the sewn body inside out, pull apart one corner so the side seam and the bottom seam line up.
2. Measure and mark a line perpendicular to the seam, creating an even triangle.
3. Pin along the marked line and sew straight across it.
4. Trim the excess fabric about 1/4 inch away from the seam.
5. Repeat on the other bottom corners for both the exterior and lining.

Assembling the Lining and Exterior

After boxing the corners, turn the exterior fabric right side out and leave the lining inside out.
Place the lining into the exterior bag so the right sides face each other.
Align the top edges and side seams, then pin or clip them together.

Attaching the Handles

Handles can be sewn into the top seam for a clean finish.

1. Cut two handle straps to your desired length.
2. Insert each handle between the lining and exterior, ensuring equal placement on both sides.
3. Pin or clip the handles securely, tucking them between the layers.

Sew around the top edge of the tote bag, securing the handles in place.
Leave a small gap for turning the bag right-side out.

Final Touches and Finishing

Once the sewing is complete, pull the entire tote bag through the gap left in the top seam.
Pulling everything through this gap will turn the bag right-side out.
Press the top edge neatly with the iron and sew along the edge to close the opening and reinforce the handles.
